Personal Study of Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ, Miracles - Hearken

  • Hearken - to listen; to give respectful attention
  • “Moving your mountains may require a miracle. Learn about miracles. Miracles come according to your faith in the Lord. (Pres Russell M. Nelson - Christ Is Risen; Faith in Him Will Move Mountains)
  • What do I need to do to have a miracle? Light the match
    • 1-Be Meek and lowly of heart → faith → hope → confess Jesus is the Christ → charity - pure love of Christ (Moroni 7:43)
      • charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things (Moroni 7:45)
      • What was the state of mind of
        • the Israelites who looked at the brazen serpent? Numbers 21:6-9. Where the lowly in heart - wandering in the wilderness, bitten by snakes and remorseful about murmuring to God?
        • Widow woman of Zarephath (Luke 4:25-26; 1 Kings 17:8-16)
          • “And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am thatering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”
          • Light the match
    • 2-Trust God in his How, not my How.
      • This is the hard part 1) to fish in a barren sea that I fished all night, 2) go and wash in Jordan seven times when there are better rivers and thinking Elisha would come and rebuke my leporsy, 3) to give my last meal and oil to Elisha, 4) ask God to take away the poisons snakes but instead provided a different How - look at the Brazen Serpent even when you blame God for your trials
      • But, if you can surrender your will to God's, give up your How, you get a better How, and that is what Jesus' first miracle of turning water to wine is trying to teach us John 2:10 “Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou has kept the good wind until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee…
    • 3-Do it - obedience to God
    • Is the miracle caused by the event (clay used to anoint the blind man's eyes, clay pots they turned water to wine, brazen serpent on a pole, 5 barley loaves and 2 small fishes, etc.) or is it a result of obedience to Jesus?
  • Background
    • Miracles occur when we do what Jesus says
    • Faith (heed Jesus, some small act, light the match) → Miracle (access to Power of God, huge fire)
    • No faith → No Miracle
  • “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?” (John 6:9)
    • “And Jesus said, Make the men sit down…in number about five thousand” (John 6:10)
    • “Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would” (John 6:11)
    • Jesus feed 5000
  • D&C 63:5 “I, the Lord, utter my voice, and it shall be obeyed”

Man born blind

  • What was his problem/pain?
    • He was physically blind and spent his time where he “sat and begged” (John 9:8)
    • His mental state was basically a hopeless dark present and future
    • His spiritual state - He had a stigma - a mark of disgrace, where the prevailing thought of the people believed he was a sinner or a least his family and that was why he was born blind
  • What was his How?
    • I would venture to say he gave up on life, where the darkness prevails. Hopeless Dark present and future, Incorrect Thinking, unable to see clearly - I was born blind because I believe either I sinned or my parents, it doesn't matter
  • What was Jesus How? It's a better!
    • Physical miracle - my sight restored
    • Mental miracle - I have my life restored, I can now add value to society by providing a service to others in exchange for money. I am more than this broken man which you see. I don't have to be defined by profession (begger), possessions (money) or physical appearance (blind). I am defined by who I am, my BE - a follower/disciple of Jesus, a recipient of God's miracle.
    • Spiritual miracle - my stigma was removed, I'm was not born blind because of some payback for bad choices.
    • I found my God - “Dost thou believe on the Son of God?” (John 9:35) “Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.” (John 9:38)
    • I know the secret to miracles - ”…any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” (John 9:31)
  • Was the miracle the event?
    • “…he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, And said unto him, Go wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.”
    • The event miracle was it the spit of Jesus, or the clay or the water at the pool of Siloam? No
    • The miracle was being obedient to Jesus - do whatsoever he saith.
  • How liberating - one moment the shame of being identified as a sinner and resorting to begging, to the next moment being able to see and realize that I am more than this broken image you see me, I am recipient of God's miracle and I know the key how to have of the power of Jesus Christ in my life daily.
  • Go, wash in the pool of Siloam…He went his way therefore, and washed and came seeing (John 9:7)
    • “…if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” (John 9:31)
  • “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.” (John 8:29)
  • “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; Any ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
  • “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine…” (John 7:17)

  • D&C 64:1-11
    • ver 7 - “…verily I say unto you, I, the Lord, forgive sins unto those who confess their sins before me and ask forgiveness…”
      • Am I holding people hostage for past mistakes?
      • Am I denying people access to forgiveness and the atonement of Jesus Christ, standing in the way between them and God?
      • Do I believe your badness is greater than Jesus goodness
      • We come to this world to learn and grow which requires making mistakes
    • ver 9 - “…ye ought to forgive one another; for he that forgiveth not his brother his trespasses standeth condemned before the Lord; for there remaineth in him the greater sin.”
      • Matt 18:23-35 parable 10,000 talents

  • Luke 22:26-27 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
