Why do I need a title block

  1. Consistent look and feel from your civil engineering office. You are creating a brand for your services.
  2. Improve Quality - there is just way too much information the civil engineer/designer needs to know and do to get a set of improvement plans complete. AutoCAD is way to complicated. Solution, do the time to create the title block right the first time, then forget about it. Keep the focus on the design and just follow the template you created once.
  3. Improve Time to get improvement plans out the door
    1. Land Developers are very time sensitive, if they can get there project approved and permitted faster than the other guy and reasonable quality, then it is worth it to them to pay a little more money for it. Title Blocks are part of the business system needed for you and your company to make a profit.
    2. Part of your companies policies and procedures. If your new to the office, you want to get up to speed as fast as possible and minimize interruptions of co-workers. Solution - here is the title block, the plot style used and the printer name. Done, you should now be able to produce plans just like the rest of the staff.

How do I create a title block?

NCS Title Block

  1. Designer Identification Block - contains the company name, address, telephone, fax, email, website, logo, PE Stamp
  2. Project Identification Block
  3. Issue Block
  4. Management Block
  5. Sheet Title Block
  6. Sheet Identification Block - current sheet/page number and total sheets

Edge of Pavement - Block

  • hatch marks showing edge of pavement go on just one side of the line representing the edge of pavement. The blank side shows gravel and the hatch side goes on the pavement.
  • S:\_CAD-STANDARDS\ver2018\COJ-EOP.dwg
    • If scale is 1“=20' then when inserting coj-eop.dwg change scale to 20
  • INSERT block
    • might need to scale, using 1”=100' try scale BSCALE 10
      • BSCALE 50 if using 1“=50'
    • might need to rotate the block. If the viewport is rotate like on the S Tiger project, then need to rotate the block 90. If normal viewport, the block should be pointing up, then will align properly along the edge of pavement line.
    • WBLOCK coj-eop-x10.dwg
  • MEASURE BLOCK
    • Problem - unable to scale the block within the MEASURE command
      • Option 1 - select all the blocks when done with the MEASURE command and resize in the Properties window.
      • Option 2 - use the ARRAY command
      • Option 3 - create a new block - scale the original block drawing and WBLOCK coj-eop-x20.dwg
    • Step 0
      • convert all lines to polylines using PEDIT JOIN
      • reverse direction to polyline using PEDIT REVERSE
    • Step 1 - select line/pline to copy a block on
    • Step 2 - BLOCK option
      • coj-eop.dwg (problem is the scale is off and don't get the option to change the scale on the fly)
    • Step 3 - Distance is half the scale so if 1”=50' then use 25' (use to use 20 if 1“=20')

    • draw circle 0.02
    • at right quadrant of circle, draw vertical line, length 0.06 at angle 105 degrees
    • at left quadrant of circle, draw vertical line, length 0.06 at angle 105 degrees
    • Figure 1-0 Complex Linetype - Edge of Pavement
  • Step 2 - MKSHAPE
    • M:\dwg\shapes\eop-hatch.shp
    • enter resolution: 128
    • base point: midpoint of horizontal 0.5” line
    • select all 3 vertical lines
    • Creates .shp and .shx files
    • Side note - MKSHAPE doesn't work with HATCH patterns, these must be exploded. I don't think you can explode a SOLID HATCH pattern.
  • Step 3 - SHAPE
    • EOP-HATCH
    • insert EOP shape at midpoint of 1 inch line
    • Use scale 1.0 and rotation 0.0
  • Step 4 - MKLTYPE
    • M:\dwg\civil-coj.lin
    • Enter linetype name: eop-hatch
    • Enter linetype description: Edge of pavement hatch pattern
    • Specify starting point for the line definition: click the left endpoint of the horizontal line
    • Specify ending point for line definition: click the right endpoint of the horizontal line
    • Select objects: select horizontal line and shape
    • *EOP-HATCH,Edge of pavement hatch pattern
      A,0.25,[EOP-HATCH,C:\Users\jjensen\Desktop\civil-coj.shx,s=1],0.25
  • Step 5 - save linetype (.lin) and shapefiles (.shp and .shx) in AutoCAD Support File Search Path
    • AutoCAD Options > Files tab > Support File Search Path > C:\Users\jjensen\appdata\roaming\autodesk\c3d 2017\enu\support
    • AutoCAD Options > Files tab > Support File Search Path > C:\Users\jjensen.CI\appdata\roaming\autodesk\c3d 2018\enu\support
  • Step 6 - load linetype to layer
  • Step 7 - draw line/polyline
    • Problems - linetype is on the wrong side
      • Solution A - use REVERSE command (doesn't work with Fillet Arcs so must be converted to PLINE)
      • Solution B - create a 2nd linetype for the opposite side (this has problems will create double linetypes and layers)
        • EOP-L
        • EOP-R
        • EOP-L-EX
        • EOP-R-EX
      • Solution B - don't use linetypes but MEASURE (Command) to copy a Block along a path (default is to place a node with PDMODE)

Symbols

How to Use NCS Symbols in Civil 3D

  • Problem - when using NCS blocks in units of inches, they are at layout size so appear very small in modelspace.
  • Solution - make annotative blocks

Install NCS Symbols

NCS Symbols - Div 01 - General Requirements

  • Section indicators for building with break standards
    • Figure 1-0 National CAD Standard - Uniform Drawing System - Module 6 - Symbols - Section Indicator
    • Civil 3D
    • ANNOSCALE 1”=1' (treat 0.5“ same as 0.5')
