Drafting a Closed Traverse with local coordinates using Civil 3D

• Figure 10-1 Traverse, p. 246 in Elementary Surveying, 13th Edition by Ghilani and Wolf
• Background - desire is to create a map from survey measurements (horizontal angles and horizontal distances) done with a total station. This wiki uses Autodesk Civil 3D to create the map.
• Step 0. open Civil 3D 2015 Imperial which should include a template which has the line and curve label styles (e.g. bearing over distance label style) already defined.
• Step 1. Drawing Setup - Text Style and Dimension Style
• STYLE - Text Style annotative, font name Arial, Height is 0.1389 inches (10 pt / 72 pt per inch), then press Set Current button.
• DIMSTYLE - Annotation Style, Modify button
• Symbols and Arrows tab - Arrow size 0.05
• Text tab - Text style Annotative
• Fit tab - Fit options Text and Text placement Over dimension line, with leader
• Primary Units tab - Precision 0.00 and Units format Degrees Minutes Seconds with Precision 0d00'00“
• Set Current and then close the dialog box
• Set Model space Annotation scale to 1”=200' (bottom right side of Civil 3D window)
• Step 2. Drawing Setup - Label Style - change the precision of the label
• Use the Settings Toolspace ? General ? Label Styles ? Line ? Bearing over Distance, then double click or right click Edit from the context menu.
• click the Layout Tab
• Component name: Bearing, Property Text ? Contents. Click the Value field to reveal the button with the three dots. Click this button.
• delete the contents in the left window
• Change the precision to 1 second
• click the white arrow button to copy the contents into the left window. Click OK
• Change Precision of Civil 3D Label
• Turn on Show Annotation Objects in the status bar
• Turn on Add Scales to Annotation Objects when the Annotation Scale Changes
• Step 3. Drawing scale 1“ = 200 ft (use to plot on 8.5×11 paper)
• Step 4. Layers
• V-SURV-LINE draw the survey traverse lines on this layer
• V-SURV-LABEL add the interior angle annotation and bearing over distance labels on this layer
• V-NODE-TEXT add the point/station label (e.g. A, B, C, D, E)
• Step 5. Layout setup 8.5”x11“ Plot
• Map Book Templates ? Map Book Template - 8.5×11 Classic.dwt
• Step 6. draw the basis of bearing line
• LINE 10000,5000
• 'ZD transparent command - azimuth direction
• 234-17-18 enter azimuth angle in degrees minutes seconds and use a dash - to deliminate/seperate the values of 234°17'18”
• 500 distance isn't given so just assume 500 ft
• Step 7. label the basis of bearing line
• in the Civil 3D Ribbon, click the Annotate tab, then click the Add Labels button to reveal Add Labels dialog box
• change feature to Line and Curve
• change label type to Single Segment
• change Line label style to Bearing over Distance
• click the Add button
• in the drawing display/model space window, click the basis of bearing line
• Step 8. draw line AE
• LINE
• with the object snap on, click point A on the basis of bearing line
• 'AD transparent command - angle and distance
• select point W on the basis of bearing line this sets the reference line for AutoCAD from which it can turn an angle from
• 151-52-24 enter the WAE observed angle to the right of 151°52'24“
• 285.13 enter the distance between AE
• ESC escape out of the angle and distance transparent command
• ESC escape out of the line command, should now be at the AutoCAD command prompt
• Step 9. draw line AB
• LINE
• with the object snap on, click point A
• 'AD transparent command - angle and distance
• select point E on the AE line this sets the reference line for AutoCAD from which it can turn an angle from
• 100-45-37 enter the observed angle to the right between backsight E and foresight B which is 100°45'37”
• 647.25 enter the distance between AB
• Step 10. draw remaining portion of the traverse
• still in the LINE and 'AD commands, continue entering the angles to the right and the distances for points B, C, and D
• Step 11. misclosure at E
• do not snap or close the traverse a point E.
• need to balance/adjust the angles using the procedures on p. 241 of Elementary Surveying by Ghilani and Wolf, 12th Edition
• need to computer preliminary azimuths or bearings
• compute departure and latitudes for each line
• compute relative precision
• Step 12. label traverse with the bearing over distance style
• Step 13. dimension the interior angles
• Setup the Dimension Style
• Command: DIMSTYLE
• select Annotative styles
• press the Modify button
• Text tab ? under Text appearance ? change Text style to Annotative
• Modify Dimension Style: Annotative
• Primary Units tab > Angular dimensions > Units format: change to Degrees Minutes Seconds
• Modify Dimension Style: Annotative - Primary Units
• click ok, click Set Current button on the Dimension Style Manager dialog box/window and then click the close button.

Drafting a Closed Traverse with State Plane coordinates using Civil 3D

• Step 1 - Open Civil 3D 2015 and click Start Drawing from the startup screen
• Step 2 - sign in to Autodesk 360
• Step 3 - add aerial photo
• download from X:\Classes\Public\Jeffery Jensen\gisdataMattBuk\crimage\s08-5\d162\s0816222.tfw and .tif
• MAPIINSERT
• Step 3 - identify State Plane Coordinates for two adjacent points in your traverse, see lecture notes CEE 121 - Elementary Surveying. For example
• Point Name, X, Y
• TBEA-SE-BC-01,786860.885,26741848.506
• TBEA-E-PK-01,786866.220,26741974.941
• Step 4 - draw Basis of Bearing line
• From the above two points, enter the following
• LINE 786860.885,26741848.506
• #786866.220,26741974.941 (by default AutoCAD uses relative coordinates, to use absolute coordinates either use # before the coordinate pair of second point or change DSETTINGS)
• Step 5 - Assign State Plane Coordinate System. Application Menu > Drawing Utilities > Drawing Settings > Units and Zone tab
• Zone Categories - USA, Nevada
• Available coordinate systems: NAD83 Nevada State Planes, East Zone, US Foot

Inaccessible Point Problem

• “It is sometimes necessary to determine the elevation of a point that is inaccessible. This task can be accomplished by establishing a baseline such that the inaccessible point is visible from both ends. As an example, assume that the elevation of the chimney shown in Figure 11.12 is desired. Baseline AB is established, its length measured and the elevations of its end points determined. Horizontal angles A and B, and altitude angles, v1 and v2 are observed as shown in the figure. Points IA and IB are vertically beneath P. Using the observed values, the law of sines is applied to compute horizontal lengths AIA and BIB of triangle ABI as AIA = AB sin (B)/sin- (A+B) (Elementary Surveying, 12th by Ghilani and Wolf, p. 290)
