Idaho Professional Engineering Stamp or Seal

Background

Idaho Board of PE & PLS

Goals and Objectives

  1. Sell blocks online
    1. GIS Engineering - WordPress and woocommerce
    2. apps.autodesk.com
  2. Sell training/tutoring services
    1. how to make the PE stamp and learn AutoCAD in the process
    2. develop materials
  3. Improve employee skills
    1. train Philippines staff (Alison, Nikko, Kristel, etc.)
  4. Promote

Deliverables

  1. pestamp-id-src.dwg
  2. pestamp-id-blk-in.dwg
  3. pestamp-id-detail.dwg and pestamp-id.detail.pdf
  4. wiki page - documenting process to create the pestamp

To Do List

  • complete PE stamp 11×17 detail
  • finalize GISE title block
  • create youtube video how to create the stamp
  • Adobe Illustrator - process to export dxf, inkscape
  • appt with Idaho Board, how to get stamp certified, Sept 7-8 Board Meeting - Why Adopt PE Stamp Standard
    • First Board to approve authorized design - recognition by signing detail
    • Detail will be used in AutoCAD classes - students learn software and provides a vision of what they can accomplish (see it in your minds eye before becomes reality, similar to freshman college students who take a picture with a cap and gown and place on bathroom mirror)
    • Uniformity of stamps - both rubber and electronic
  • Nelson and DigitalOcean - setup WordPress and WooCommerce

AutoCAD Blocks

  • Modify the block definition in the source drawing and reinsert it into the current drawing
    • Updating a block that was created in another drawing and then inserted into the current drawing does NOT trigger an automatic updated (like is the case with XREFs). To update a block that has been updated in another drawing, you must reinsert it.
  • Modify the block definition in the current drawing
    • The Block Editor provides the easiest way to modify a block in the current drawing. The changes you make and save in the Block Editor replace the existing block definition, and all references to that block IN THE CURRENT drawing are immediately updated. Note that same block is NOT updated in other drawings like it would be with and XREF.
    • An alternative way to modify a block definition is to create a new block definition, and save with the same name as the existing block. You can insert and explode an instance of the original block (the one you want to change/edit) and then use the resulting objects in creating the new block definition. but enter the name of the existing block
  • 2-step process to delete a block definition
    • 1. delete all instances of the block from the drawing
    • 2. PURGE command to remove the block definition

AutoCAD Layers

NCS Layer Naming Convention

  • National CAD Standard - Annotation Layer Names

AutoCAD Template (.dwt)

File Naming Convention

  • Online repository of stamps
  • pestamp-id-blk-in.dwg - this is the AutoCAD block (blk) you will use to insert into a layout/paperspace. Scale inches (in), all objects on layer 0. Based on acad.dwt basic template supplied with AutoCAD.
  • pestamp-id-src.dwg - this is the source AutoCAD block you will edit. Has layers and notes.
  • pestamp-id-detail.dwg - this is the 11×17 detail drawing that any CAD drafter can use to recreate the seal/stamp using AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, and so on.
  • pestamp-id-purchased.dwg - PE stamp as purchased from online companies such as pestamps.com
  • pestamp-id-scan.pdf - actual wet stamp scanned in

Scalebar Notes

  • relationship or ratio of size of object drawn to size of actual object
    • paper:real
    • drawn:actual
    • model:world
  • For machine drawings, the recommended practice is to letter
    • FULL SIZE, 1.00 = 1.00, 1 = 1, 1/1
    • HALF SIZE, .50 = 1.00, 1/2 = 1, 1/2
      • SCALE: 1:2
      • SCALE: 1/2
      • SCALE: .5
    • QUARTER SIZE, .25 = 1.00, 1/4 = 1, 1/4
    • EIGHTH SIZE, .125 = 1.00, 1/8 = 1, 1/8
    • TWICE SIZE, 2.00 = 1.00, 2 = 1, 2/1
    • TEN TIMES SIZE, 10.00 = 1.00, 10 = 1, 10/1
    • reference Technical Drawing, 6th by Giesecke, Mitchell, Spencer, Hill, p. 35
  • “For machine drawings, the scale indicates the ratio of the size of the drawn object to its actual size, regardless of the unit of measurement used. Expansion or enlargement scales are given as 2:1, 4:1, 5:1, 10:1, and so on.” (Technical Drawing with Engineering Graphics, 14th by Giesecke, Mitchell, Spencer, Hill, Dygdon, Novak, and Lockhart, p. 31)
  • Drawing Scale - Reduction or Enlargement
  • Mechanical Engineer Scale (Pacific Arc 91125)
  • Side 1 of 3 (full-divided)
    • 16 = 16th of an inch, Full Size/Scale, 1:1
      • only actual size scale
      • Unit = inches, 16th of inch
    • 50 = 50th (fiftieths) of an inch (decimal-inch scale), TWICE SIZE, 2:1
      • only Expansion/Enlargement scale
      • 50 divisions/ticks per inch
      • Unit = decimal inches, 100th of an inch
      • 50 tick marks = 0.5 inches
      • 200 tick marks = 2 inches (actual plot is 4 inches because it's been enlarged 2x)
      • 0 dropped from numbers, so 2 is really 20
      • 1 tick mark is 0.01 inches
      • value of 1 on the scale = 0.1 inches
      • value of 10 on the scale = 1.0 inches
      • value of 20 on the scale = 2.0 inches
      • value of 50 on the scale = 50/100 inches or 1/2 inch
  • Side 2 of 3 (open-divided, reduction scale)
    • 1/2 SIZE (read from left)
    • 1/4 SIZE (read from right)
      • read to nearest 1/8“
    • 3/4 SIZE (read from left)
    • 3/8 SIZE (read from right)
  • Side 3 of 3 (open-divided, reduction scale)
    • 1/8 (read from left)
    • 1/4 (read from right)
    • 1 (read from left)
    • 1/2 (read from right)

  • MEASUREMENT 0 for imperial and 1 for metric
    • mainly an issue for the drawing that the block is going to be inserted into. If set to 2 for feet, when inserting a block will be 1/12 size because of this setting. So very important to understand.
